Fanuc Robot Arm for ~$600

Fanuc M-16iB/20 used in mechatronics program

On Govdeals: Fanuc M-16iB/20 robot arm from Swain County's Business and Education Center in North Carolina, manufactured in 2005. It's surplus now due to program changes. Currently hovering around $600, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it got up to at least $2k based on ebay comps of $4-15k (a similar arm I bought on Govdeals went for $4k).

Highlights

  • 20kg payload

  • 0.08 level of repeatability

  • reach of 1667mm

  • floor, ceiling, angle, and wall mounting options (!!!)

  • ros1 support via ROS-Industrial

Warning: Keep in mind that this unit also requires 480v / 3 phase power, so unless you have a machine shop to put this in you’ll need to spend a bit on a dedicated circuit, three phase converter (>$500 on amazon), and likely a 480v transformer (>$400 used, not counting shipping).

Details: The arm (A05B-1216-B202), controller (A05B-2463-B150 R-J3iB), pendant (A05B-2490-C171), plus SAS appendages (PGR 40, GRZ 20-16 KT), and an extra power cord. Note: the controller is currently inactive due to missing the 455-key, but the listing notes that they’ll be purchasing a new one for the auction winner.

With ROS-Industrial support, it's should be pretty plug and play with more modern systems, though I’d probably want to port it to ROS2 for realtime control. I purchased a large Kawasaki arm from the same era that ended up being a nightmare to integrate, so learn from my mistakes.

Only media I could find with the arm in the background. Honestly kind of surprised this thing was in action with kids this close and no safety cage in sight.
